Scouts Honor Veterans for Memorial Day With Gravesite Flags

On Saturday, thousands of scouts placed American flags on the graves of veterans ahead of Memorial Day in a ceremony that has become an annual tradition.

The number of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts participating in the event at Los Angeles National Ceremony, where nearly 90,000 veterans are buried, seemingly increases every year. This year, roughly 10,000 scouts paid their respects ahead of Monday's national holiday.

Each scout placed a flag in the ground by each grave and saluted.

"I think it's a nice way to show our respect for them because without them, we wouldn't be here," says nine-year-old Erika Huanca.

She adds, "I can almost hear the people saying to each one of us putting down the flags, 'Thank you.'"
