Sherman Oaks Home Red-Tagged After Giant Eucalyptus Free Falls

A house in Sherman Oaks was deemed unfit for occupancy after a large eucalyptus tree fell on it Thursday.

No one was injured by the tree, which fell about 3:35 p.m. in the 3900 block of Dixie Canyon Avenue, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

"Fortunately, no one was home. No one was injured," neighbor Alex Auerbach said. "Their dogs are safe so it is only property damage."

Although the tree went down during a rain storm, the fire department will not make an official determination as what caused it to fall, Humphrey said.

One neighbor told NBC4 she believes the tree was weakened by termites.

A building inspector later red-tagged the building, meaning it was deemed unsafe to occupy, according to a report from the scene.
