Sighting of Young Man With Gun Prompts Canoga Park HS Lockdown

The young man dropped the gun than ran onto campus, police said

Canoga Park High School was on lockdown for several hours Thursday as Los Angeles police searched for a young man who dropped a gun on a nearby street and ran onto campus.

A suspect, a 19-year-old man, was taken into custody and the lockdown was lifted at about 12:40 p.m.

LA Police Department spokesman Richard French said officers responded to a report of a man who was seen with a gun at about 9:25 a.m. Thursday outside the school at 6850 Topanga Canyon Blvd.

Monica Carazo, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, said school police saw the young man with a gun near the campus and tried to question him, but he fled onto the school grounds.

A gun was recovered, LAPD officials said.

It was unclear if the suspect was a student at the school. His name was not released.
