Family and Community Remember Woman Killed in Silver Lake Trader Joe's Standoff

A service of remembrance was held Sunday to mark a year since an officer-involved shooting and standoff in a Silver Lake Trader Joe's killed an assistant manager.

The crew members of the Trader Joe's on the 2700 block of Hyperion Avenue reunited inside the Silver Lake Community Church in the days after they had escaped the deadly standoff. Sunday, they gathered again at that church for the one-year anniversary of the death of their teammate Melyda "Mely" Maricela Corado.

According to police reports, a gunman fled inside a Trader Joe's during a police chase and exchanged gunfire with the pursuing officers on July 21, 2018. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said two officers fired a total of eight shots in return. Police confirmed that one of those shots struck Corado, who was near the front of the store. The bullet traveled through her arm and into her body killing her.

Moore had then described the officers as being "devastated." He said he believed police did what they had to do to defend the people in the market and themselves.

Corado's friends and family, her work colleagues and community members gathered at the church. Residents in the Silver Lake area said the shooting and hostage standoff affected many in the neighborhood.

Carado's brother, who spoke during Sunday's ceremony, said his world will never be the same without his kind and caring sister.

Organizers have planned a candle light walk from the church to the Silver Lake Trader Joe's, which will lead in to a vigil that starts at 8 p.m.
