Victim of Trader Joe's Shooting Remembered One Year Later

A year after the deadly shootout and hostage situation at a Trader Joe's in Silver Lake, the victim is remembered. Rick Montanez reports for NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 ,2019. (Published Sunday, July 21, 2019)

A service of remembrance was held Sunday to mark a year since an officer-involved shooting and standoff in a Silver Lake Trader Joe's killed an assistant manager.

The crew members of the Trader Joe's on the 2700 block of Hyperion Avenue reunited inside the Silver Lake Community Church in the days after they had escaped the deadly standoff. Sunday, they gathered again at that church for the one-year anniversary of the death of their teammate Melyda "Mely" Maricela Corado.

According to police reports, a gunman fled inside a Trader Joe's during a police chase and exchanged gunfire with the pursuing officers on July 21, 2018. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said two officers fired a total of eight shots in return. Police confirmed that one of those shots struck Corado, who was near the front of the store. The bullet traveled through her arm and into her body killing her.

Moore had then described the officers as being "devastated." He said he believed police did what they had to do to defend the people in the market and themselves.
