Road Finally Reopens After Sinkhole Shutdown in Torrance

A section of Van Ness Avenue in Torrance finally reopened Saturday, after a water main break caused a large sinkhole last week and subsequent rains delayed repair work.

City officials announced Saturday afternoon that all lanes of Van Ness Avenue between Dominguez Street and Arlington Avenue were open.

"I was notified by our water department that repairs to fill the sinkhole and reopen the street will be delayed until Jan. 19 because of the upcoming inclement weather," Besanceney said.

The sinkhole opened Jan. 12 on the southbound side of Van Ness, and grew to 30 feet by 15 feet in size, Torrance Fire Chief Carl Besanceney said.

There was settling of the street on the northbound side.
