Ski, Ride, Soar: Big Bear Mountain Resort Opens

Temperatures are still a tad toasty, but the snow fun is on at the high-elevation destination.

WHERE HAS YOUR BOARD BEEN ALL SUMMER? Did you leave it at a good friend's place? Is it near the back of your closet or under your bed? Or did you keep it right next to the front door, or even the trunk of your car, in order to move more quickly, and efficiently, the moment you receive the dreamed-of call that a snow-cool destination you love was finally open for the season? Wherever you carefully and lovingly stowed your ride, or your poles and skis and boots and clothes, matters not; whatever works, works. But fingers crossed that your winter gear may be easily found, and just as easily collected, for a big Southern California opening took place on Friday, Dec. 8.

BEAR MOUNTAIN AND SNOW SUMMIT... both made their schuss-into-the-season debuts on that date, with a pair of lifts running at Bear Mountain and a trio humming over at Snow Summit. As for the whole snowmaking shebang? It's proceeding quite nicely, so much so that "more terrain (is) expected to open shortly." And as for runs you can visit ASAP? There are eight at all, with a quintet to keep you flying at Bear Mountain and three at Snow Summit. Also, "a full terrain park" is open at Bear Mountain, if that's more your jam.

CLASSIC WINTRY TEMPERATURES... may be a few days out still, as we head into mid-December, but take note that the looking-long forecast shows a true temp drop around the region when the solstice arrives. So keep that board and gear close, closer still, for your trip to the lifts at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit can't be too far down the line. Maybe it'll even happen over opening weekend, if you just can't wait.
