Officers responded to a domestic violence report early Monday at a South LA home before gunfire was exchanged

A gunman died Monday after a shootout with Los Angeles police in South Los Angeles, police said.

Police responded to a domestic dispute call around 2 a.m. at a South L.A. home. Two patrol officers arrived and police said the man was outside of the home when he opened fire on the officers, police said.

Police returned gunfire and the shooter was killed, according to authorities. The gunman's wife, who called police, was also shot in the upper body.

It remained unclear whether she was shot by the gunman or injured in the crossfire, police said.

The woman and a 19-year-old man, described as her son, were inside the house at the time of the shooting. The teen was not hurt in the shootout.
