Wildfire Threatens Homes, Closes Part of Highway 138 in Summit Valley

A 75-acre wildfire in Summit Valley threatened dozens of homes and forced the closure of Highway 138 Thursday evening, just as rush hour began.

The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. and had grown to consume some 75 acres within 2 ½ hours, according to an online update from U.S. Forest Service.

Burning rapidly through dry grass and chaparral, the fire threatened 25 homes in the Telephone Canyon area, north of the fire, however, evacuation orders were not issued and the threat was eliminated by Thursday night.

Some 200 fire personnel were assigned to fight the fire, the agency said.

State Highway 138 between Summit Valley Road and State Highway 173 was closed for several hours. It reopened at 10 p.m.

The blaze was 80 percent contained by 9 p.m., according to the forest service's online incident report. The acreage was holding steady at 75.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
