Suspect in Chatsworth Double Homicide Faces Gun Charges

The suspect in a Los Angeles double killing who was arrested after a seven-hour dragnet with police has been charged with assault with a firearm on an officer and other weapons counts.

The district attorney's office said Wednesday they weren't ready to charge 43-year-old Brent Zubek with murder, but that he is considered a suspect in the death of a Chatsworth couple.

Their decomposing bodies were found Aug. 12 near the home they once shared with Zubek.

Zubek was sought for questioning when he fired at officers who had him under surveillance Sunday. A manhunt was launched, and several hours later Zubek was shot and wounded in the hip after he pulled a gun and pointed at officers.

The shooting at police, not the double-homicide, is the basis for 8 felony counts filed against him in San Fernando Superior Court.

"Based on this alone, he's facing six or eight life terms," said Deputy District Attorney Michael Blake.

Blake said Zubek being in custody will allow homicide investigators additional time to develop the case.

Police have yet to solve another mystery in the case—two arson fires that were set in the house after the remains were recovered. One was set early Monday morning after police had located Zubek and were in the process of arresting him.

The coroner has yet to identify the female victim and the male victim's identity is being withheld until next of kin is notified.

A woman identified as Zubek's girlfriend was arrested hours before he was. The DA has not filed charges against her and would not say if she would testify against him.

Zubeck will not enter a plea until next month. In the meantime, he remains jailed on a no-bail hold.
