A burglary suspect who barricaded himself for nearly 12 hours inside a Temple City In-N-Out restaurant was taken into custody -- animal style -- when a petite pooch named Deek was sent in to fetch him and he was located in a crawl space.
Deputies went to the 10600 block of Lower Azusa Road in response to a burglary alarm call about 2:40 a.m. and saw the man in the building, according to the sheriff's department.
The deputies determined that the man was not authorized to be inside the location and told him to come out, but he refused. Deputies then ordered some evacuations in the area and summoned a SWAT team and crisis negotiators to the scene.
The standoff ended about 2 p.m. when the SWAT team went in and took the man into custody.
Deputies initially sent two larger K9s into the eatery. When they came up empty, Deek, a Patterdale terrier trained to work in confined spaces, indicated to his handlers that the alleged hamburglar was in a crawl space and he was taken into custody.
The suspect's name was not immediately released.
