Actor Taye Diggs Tackles Home Intruder After Returning From SAG Awards

The "Private Practice" star chased the man and detained him until officers arrived, according to the LAPD

Actor Taye Diggs chased down and detained an intruder after returning home from the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night in Studio City.

The "Private Practice" star returned home at about 11 p.m. Sunday to find the man in his Oakdell Lane residence, Los Angeles Police Department officials confirmed Monday morning. The story was first reported by TMZ.com.

The subject ran, but Diggs chased the man and tackled him, detaining the intruder until police arrived, according to the LAPD. Diggs heard noises coming from the side of his house and encountered the intruder when he went to investigate, according to the LAPD.

Diggs tackled the man in the streets as his wife called 911, police said.

"A suspect was seen fleeing the garage area," said detective Noah Stone.

It was not immediately clear how the man accessed Diggs' home or whether the actor was injured.

Diggs and wife Idina Menzel -- the two actors were married in 2003 -- attended the SAG awards together Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Diggs portrayed Dr. Sam Bennett on ABC's "Private Practice."

He was part of the orginal Broadway cast of "Rent" and appeared in the feature film adaptation. His film appearances include "Go," "The Best Man," 'The Way of the Gun" and "The Wood."

Diggs' encounter with a home invader comes about five months after rapper-actor LL Cool J confronted an intruder in his Studio City home. The intruder, who was charged with first-degree burglary, was hospitalized with a broken nose, jaw and ribs after the encounter with the "NCIS: Los Angeles" actor.
