Ten Hours of Huell Howser, to Help Beat the Heat

It's the 25th anniversary of "Visiting... with Huell Howser," and KCET is throwing a marathon to celebrate.

What's the larger number?

How many years "Visiting... with Huell Howser" is celeberating in 2018 or how many times you've watched your favorite episodes of the Huell Howser-helmed series?

That's a toughie, because the bright-spirited public television show is turning 25, and some fans out there have surely dipped into their go-to episodes dozens of times over the years.

Here's why: We've never had a host quite like Mr. Howser, a radiant, joyful being made of pure sunshine, genial curiosity, and a can-do willingness to connect with Californians, be they quirky or shy or funky or all of the above.

Mr. Howser left us in 2013, but his radiant legacy shines on via his numerous public television offerings, including the forever-watchable "Visiting... with Huell Howser."

To celebrate the silver anniversary of this widely loved series, KCET will run ten hours of ultimate Huelldom on Sunday, Aug. 5. So many episodes, so many places to see, so many of our neighbors to meet, so many "well hello everybodys!" to savor.

Look, it'll be hot, and Huell knew heat: He regularly called upon desert communities at their toastiest. So draw the shades, turn on the telly, add extra ice to the pitcher of lemonade, and spend the first Sunday in August with the legendary travelogue host.

Start time is 10 in the morning, and places Mr. H'll be calling upon? The Glass Museum in Riverside, a garden near 29 Palms, and Vernon Light & Power are all on the list.

Call it interesting stuff to learn about on a sweltering day. And another interesting note: "Visiting... with Huell Howser" ran from 1993 to 2011, quite the amaaaaazing span of time for a television series.

Happy 25th anniversary, "Visiting... with Huell Howser," a swell travel show that remains timeless. Thanks the swellest of hosts for that happy fact, a man who understood what made California so special: the people, full stop, end of story, over and out.
