Three Firms Have Submitted Bids to Build a People Mover at LAX

Three pre-qualified teams have submitted proposals to become the builder and operator of the Los Angeles International Airport automated people mover, the airport said Friday.

The APM is one part of the larger $5.5 billion Landside Access Modernization Program at LAX meant to reduce the number of vehicles that need to travel in and out of the facility by an estimated 3,200 per day.

"The three proposals have been received on-time," said Jamaal Avilez, procurement manager for the Automated People Mover RFP. "Subject matter experts will now proceed with reviewing each proposal and will make a recommendation to our CEO and board in January."

The APM will move travelers to and from the airport along a 2.25-mile track to a consolidated rental car facility off site, which will eliminate the need for shuttle buses to travel in and out of the Central Terminal Area. It will have six stations -- three inside the CTA and three outside -- with connections to light rail, regional buses, parking and terminals.

Scoring for this project will be based on technical merit, visual appeal, user experience and price, LAX said.
