Tiki Pros Shake up the Roosevelt's Spare Room

Visiting mixologists will create fanciful concoctions on select summer Wednesdays at the Hollywood landmark.

What to Know

  • Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
  • Third Wednesdays through Sept. 2019
  • Brooklyn, Portland, and Austin tiki specialists still to come

Modern tiki culture, as an idea, is very much about travel, about enjoying an adventure, about calling upon a distant shore, all for a night of beverage-based exploration and beautiful music and art that summons the islands.

But what if the tiki-based travel involved a libation-making professional traveling to where you are? Or at least your city?

That's some of the spirit behind the spirited series of summer nights called Evening of Tiki.

You can find them not in a traditional tiki bar but at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel's The Spare Room, a space with plenty of vintage charm.

So who is venturing to Tinseltown, all to celebrate the art of tiki drinks?

A number of shaker-wielding pros from famous tiki bars found elsewhere, including Ben Clemons & Puck of Nashville's Pearl Diver, Will Elliott of Brooklyn's Maison Premiere, Emily Mistell of Portland's Hey Love, and Travis Tober of Austin's Nickel City.

LA says goodbye to the iconic Conga Room

They're not all visiting The Spare Room, with drink recipes in hand, over the course of one night, but rather a series of select Wednesday evenings throughout the summer of 2019.

Each bartender, by the by, has imagined a "... special, over-the-top tiki-inspired menu for one night only."

If you'd like to travel to each of these cities listed, and sip within these well-known bars, well, you can, but that will take time and travel dollars.

But getting to the Spare Room on a select Wednesday night?

Rather easier. It all begins at 9 p.m., on select Wednesdays, and there are four more to go, through Sept. 18.

We'll raise a fruit-laden, rum-based concoction to that.
