Tow Truck Driver Helping Stranded Motorist is Killed on I-405

Police say Faapuna Manu was run over by a suspected drunk driver as he helped a motorist inflate a spare tire

A tow truck driver who had stopped to help a stranded driver was struck and killed by another vehicle.

Faapuna Manu had stopped his truck on I-405 near Orange Ave. in Long Beach at about 2 a.m. Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said in its report on the collision.

He was standing next to his truck inflating a spare tire for the people inside a disabled 2005 Mercedes-Benz when he was hit.

Raymond Burley, the driver of the 2005 Toyota that police say hit Manu, was hospitalized with moderate injuries, according to the report.

Burley, 26, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the report said.
