Two art installations dedicated to raising awareness of global issues went on view Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport.
"These exhibitions draw upon artists' keen observations and encourage the public's capacity for curiosity and discovery," said Sarah Cifarelli, LAX's art program director.
The first installation, "Forest, For the Trees," features more than 40 knitted, crocheted, woven and other fiber-based artwork that reinterpret the ecological features of old-growth forests. Airport officials say the display is aimed at drawing attention to old-growth forests and the rare and endangered species of plants and animals that live in them.
Curated by Los Angeles-based artist Julie Kornblum, the installation is on view in the Tom Bradley International Terminal's Customs Hallway, on the Arrivals Level, and will remain on display through January.
"This installation hopes to address the wonders and perils of the forest by creating an environment that is unique and fantastic," Kornblum said.
Contributors ranged from novice knitters to professional artists who used standard, recycled and unusual materials to create trees, groundcover, animals, water, rain and other forest features, according to LAWA.
The second installation, "The Unemployed," was created by Jody Zellen and features animated figures representing unemployment rates in more than 200 countries. The installation will be on display through September in Terminal 6 on the Departures Level.
