The city of Los Angeles' first two-way bike lane is open on downtown's Spring Street, between Third Street and Ninth Street.
"Our bicycle community needs improved access wherever we can implement it and in downtown these two-way bike lanes will allow for a safer and more convenient experience that we hope leads to more being installed throughout the city," Councilman Jose Huizar said. "We are proud to bring the first two-way bike lanes in the city to Spring and Main in downtown and I want to thank our partners at LADOT for adding the lanes."
The street has a history of innovative bike programs, Huizar's office said, with Spring Street, along with First Street in Boyle Heights, once being home to the city's first green bike lanes.
The new project on Spring Street will convert the current southbound bike lane on the east side of Spring into a south/northbound bike lane, as part of the city's $2.3 million Main & Spring Forward project.
Other improvements are coming as part of the initiative, including better crossings for pedestrians, more protected bike lanes, improved bus-bicycle traffic flow and safety, and maximized parking and loading zones, Huizar's office said.
Phase I improvements for the Main Street installation are expected to be completed by fall 2019, and are also scheduled to include two-way bike lanes.
