1M People Expected at US Surfing Open in Huntington Beach

The world's largest surfing competition hosts a plethora of activities and sporting events.

Some 1 million people are expected to converage beginning Saturday through next week for the annual Vans US Open of Surfing event to be held Saturday, July 23 through July 31 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

To help prevent a repeat of rioting that happened at the event in 2013, police discourage alcohol and said they'd be patrolling heavily in uniform and undercover.

Two years ago, the event erupted with looting and rioting after it closed, but last year it was scaled down as organizers dropped music concerts and focused just on the surfing competitions.

Event sponsors have put out a list of tips on what to bring and not to bring, transportation, maps and other useful tips on getting around.

Here's a list of tips:

What to bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Water
  • Camera
  • Footwear
  • Sunglasses

What not to bring:

  • Weapons of any kind
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Pets

  • Beach Toys (footballs and frisbees)
  • A bad attitude
