USC Hosts Most International Students in U.S. For 12th Straight Year

Almost 10,000 students were hosted by the University of Southern California during the 2012-2013 academic year

For the 12th consecutive year, more international students are attending the University of Southern California than any other American institution, according to an annual report released Monday.

The Trojans hosted 9,840 students for the 2012-2013 academic year, accounting for almost one-quarter of its total enrollment of about 40,000 students.

Allan Goodman, president of the nonprofit who released the report, the Institute of International Education, said USC’s top rank spoke to the university’s choice location and strong push for international students.

“No one is surprised; they have Los Angeles going for them,” Goodman said. “It’s a great university."

The university was proud of the now yearly recognition, school officials said.

“It’s a big responsibility to enroll so many international students,” said Tony Tambascia, director of the Office of International Services. “Once students are here we do everything we can to help them have a really great experience."

Most of USC’s international students came from China and India, with 3,771 students and 1,806 students attending classes last year, according to a news release from the university.

Almost a one-third of the university’s international students were enrolled in graduate-level programs in fall 2012, with most of those attending the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Purdue University, New York University and Columbia University filled out the report’s top five institutions hosting international students.

UCLA landed the sixth spot, with 8,424 students attending the university for the 2012-2013 school year.

The total number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by seven percent from 2011-2012, to record high 819,644 students for this past academic school year.

Nationwide, most of the growth was driven by China and Saudi Arabia, the report found.

The figures were released in the Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education, a nonprofit education and training organization, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
