Vacant Westlake Building Gutted by Blaze

Firefighters waged a nearly hour-long battle in scorching heat Friday to knock down a greater-alarm fire in a vacant three-story apartment building near MacArthur Park in the Westlake district.

Crews poured water on the flames from outside the building in the 600 block of Bonnie Brae Street after parts of the structure -- the scene of a previous fire -- began to collapse, according to Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

It took 78 firefighters 58 minutes to knock down the blaze, which was reported about 5 p.m., she said. No injuries were reported.

There was no immediate word on what sparked the flames.
