Police are investigating the death of a 54-year-old chiropractor who was found on the floor of his office by a patient Thursday morning, officials said.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, a patient arrived at Robert Rainey’s chiropractic office in the 9200 block of Venice Boulevard (map) for a scheduled appointment, police said. The office usually opened at 7 a.m.

The patient saw Rainey lying on the office floor and called 911, police said. Detectives said Rainey, a resident of Culver City, appeared to suffer severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators removed items from the office Thursday.

The victim is the brother of LA Times media writer James Rainey, the newspaper reported.

Detectives are treating this investigation as a homicide, and anyone with information is asked to call LAPD West Bureau Homicide Unit at 213-382-9470.
