Streets were flooded after a water main broke in Brentwood early Tuesday and caused a road to buckle, requiring repairs that might last into the evening.
The pipe, which is believed to be an 8-inch main installed in 1933, broke near the intersection of Vicente Boulevard and Montana Avenue around 3 a.m., officials said. About 25 feet from the break, water bubbled up from below the surface of the damaged road.
"Every day they're aging, every day we're replacing them," said Kirk Broyard of the LADWP. "We do have an aggressive replacement program, and we replace more pipe than we have breaks."
Firefighters asked LADWP crews come to turn off the gusher.
Water service is expected to be restored Tuesday afternoon, and road repairs are expected to be finished by Tuesday evening.
Residents were unhappy they have yet again been hit by a leak.

"It makes me crazy, but I can't fix it," resident Betty Zamost said. "How many episodes have we had in the last year? Until we take it seriously and invest the money in the infrastructure and conservation, this is the way it will be."
