Weed Museum: History, Culture and Munchies, Of Course

Sure, you can legally buy marijuana these days, but what do you really know about pot?

The online cannabis community Weedmaps will open the Museum of Weed in Los Angeles Saturday, hoping to give people a refresher on the up-and-down past of marijuana.

"The Weedmaps Museum of Weed takes visitors through the storied history of cannabis by moving through the many varied locations and time periods where it has typically -- or stereotypically -- been consumed," according to the venue's website. "Here, we celebrate the victories and shed light on the most damning moments throughout the last century."

The 30,000-square-foot museum at 720 N. Cahuenga Blvd. is scheduled to be open for a limited time only, with the closing expected on Sept. 29.

The museum will include seven exhibits and, of course, a gift shop and a cafe offering "munchies."

"The museum exists to celebrate how culture and cannabis shaped each other," according to the museum's website.

The seven exhibits trace the world history of marijuana, exploring the roots of hemp and the tumultuous years when ``cannabis was used as a tool to fuel hysteria and racial tensions in the early 20th century."

It moves through the counter-culture movement to legalize pot, the nation's "War on Drugs" and the eventual mainstream acceptance and legalization of the drug.

It also includes a "plant lab," which will expose visitors to "the scientific and technological advancements that gave way to a new era of cannabis knowledge and understanding."

Visitors must be at least 18 years old, and general admission tickets are $35.

The museum will be open Wednesdays through Sundays, with varying hours.
