Weekend: Breeders' Cup

Championship ponies set to clip-clop at Santa Anita Park.

Breeders' Cup: Watching champion horses fly by in the historic setting of Santa Anita Park? Thrills await, as do fashion-forward moments, fancy dining opportunities, and a whole host of haute happenings that are part and parcel of this pony-perfect affair. The dates are Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5, but don't dally if you want to go, as this event isn't here every year (though it will trot into Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in 2017).

Citadel Outlets Tree Lighting: Have you heard a carol or two recently on the radio or in a store? You know what is coming next, then: A mondo light-up-a-fir festivity, the kind that happens at several major destinations starting in November. The "World's Tallest Live-Cut Tree" will go aglow on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the 5 Freeway-close shopping center, with live musical performances to serenade it to full sparkle.

Pumpkin Launch: A grand gourd can sit handsomely a porch, or a table, but can it take flight? It can, and will, with the help of several trebuchet-cool devices built by science students from area colleges and high schools. The place? Cal State Fullerton, at the athletic fields, on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 5. Is Discovery Cube Orange County a part of the invention-smart event? You bet, pumpkin people. Get ready to watch squashes soar.

ICE at Santa Monica: It's the very first weekend of the season for this outdoor rink, the one that sits only a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean. True, the weather won't exactly be frigid, but will a few twirls on the frozen water set you to thinking wintry thoughts? Perhaps, sweet skaters of Southern California. Perhaps.

Gourmet Grocers' Open House: So you're already plotting your seasonal supper menus, the ones filled with stuffing and rolls and potatoes and such. Best get some solid advice from the people behind the fabulous shops and food counters of the Original Farmers Market at Third & Fairfax. Demos, tips, and such await, dear foodies, on Saturday, Nov. 5.
