Weekend: CatCon Pads into Pasadena

Feline celebs, merch galore, and sweet adoptions are part of this kitty coterie.

The Padding of Kitten Paws? Such a sweet sound. The arrival of one of the planet's purriest parties, a cat-tastic two-day festival devoted to all aspects of cat parenting, cat fashion, and cat celebrities? It's the sound of the colossal CatCon trotting into the Pasadena Convention Center. Dozens upon dozens of cat-related vendors, a feline adoption, famous Instagram whisker-rockers, and chances to dress up in your pointy-of-ear finest are all ahead on Aug. 4 and 5, so pad for your ticket as fast as your lovey runs towards to the call of the can opener.

Downtown Burbank Car Classic: Spying a shiny vehicle at the stoplight? The kind of well-cared-for roll with magnificent fins and curve-tastic windows? A thrill, if you dig autos. Which means that the chance to stroll by over 150 vintage autos, and a few famous film dream machines, too, is that stoplight feeling multiplied by a whole bunch. That it is all free to enjoy multiplies that good feeling even further. So put on your strolling shoes, wear your look-closer glasses, and head to this summertime favorite on the afternoon and early evening of Saturday, Aug. 4.

San Fernando Valley Drive-in Nights: Speaking of cars, they're mighty good for parking before a big screen, the kind of screen showing the movies you grew up with and loved, back in the day. But where to go to find such a rare treat? Answer: Lake Balboa Complex at Woodley Park on Aug. 3, 4, 10, and 11. First up on the four-night run of great, LA-roots flicks? "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" on Aug. 3. "Back to the Future II" rolls on Aug. 4, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" on Aug. 10, and "Selena" on Aug. 11. Tickets, need-to-knows, the good stuff? Wrap it up here before loading up the car for Lake Balboa.

Brew at the LA Zoo: Ever quaffed a craft brew that was designed by a bear? And not just any bear, but Ranger, a beloved black bear living at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens? Your chance is coming up on Friday, Aug. 3 at this annual 21-plus party. While most of the animals'll be snoozy-snoozy, keepers will be out with a few wee 'n fascinating critters. Also? There shall be tunes and bites to buy and an oodle and a half of fancy foams to try. Over 40 breweries are set to show, which is cool, but be sure to seek out Ranger's beer the moment you arrive.

Symphony at the OC Fair: Speaking of music and animals and sheer sweetness, consider swinging by Centennial Farm, at the OC Fair & Event Center, on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 1 o'clock, if you'd like to see brass musicians from the Pacific Symphony play for the goats, piglets, cows, and sheep. Your fair admission gets you into this one-of-a-kind, heart-tugging symphony, oh yeah. Also happening this weekend, and also with animals to admire? There's the awesome Ventura County Fair, and, up the 101 a spell, Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara, an excellent fiesta famed for beautiful horses, as well as great dance, mercados, parades, and history.
