Weekend: ‘The West Coast's Largest Art Fair'

Visual wonders of a modern and contemporary nature will shine at the LA Art Show in DTLA.

LA Art Show 2019: When a treasure-packed extravaganza is billed as "the West Coast's largest art fair," you can count on coming across a notable amount of notable works by a large number of celebrated and emerging artists. The annual spectacular returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center through Sunday, Jan. 27, spotlighting "an encyclopedic lineup of exhibitors" in the areas of both modern and contemporary art. The focus is on the Pacific Rim at the 24th annual show, which will include multiple events in addition to the amazing art displays. The vibe? Global and future-embracing. The other vibe? Total excitement.

Lunar New Year Festival: Are you ready for the boar-beautiful bashes, those celebratory occasions welcoming the Year of the Pig? There will be a number of wonderful events in the weeks ahead, but the Jan. 26 and 27 to-do in Monterey Park will be among the very biggest. Past attendance has seen numbers in the 50,000 to 100,000 range, so arrive early for the firecracker kick-off on Saturday, food booths, the rides, and the ever-amazing lion and dragon dancers. It's time to say hello to all the good that's ahead, and you can, for free, in Downtown Monterey Park.

2019 Skid Row Carnival of Love: Join a four-hour festival on the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 26 and enjoy "carnival games, entertainers and performances, free hugs, face painting, music, and more!" It's "A Day of Human Kindness," presented by The Wayfarer Foundation, an emotion-filled, joy-raising event that "... will gather more than 5,000 people affected by homelessness and and passionate volunteers in LA's Skid Row." The launch of a new pilot program, which matches 100 volunteers "... with 100 individuals experiencing homelessness" for a year of support, is also part of the day. More info? Right here.

"Laverne & Shirley" marathon: If this sweet, sunshiny, and forever funny sitcom has long been one of your favorites, what a treat is in store for you. For The Garry Marshall Theatre will run 12 hours of episodes, back-to-back-to-back, in memory of the late Penny Marshall. Special guests, including actor Cindy Williams, will stop by during the day, and you can bet a fan or two or more will don a Shotz uniform or "L" monogram. And totally terrific, too? The Sunday, Jan. 27 event is totally free, so show early and grab a seat.

Dapper Day at LACMA: Swanning in a stylish way around the Los Angeles County Museum of Art? It's a grand way to spend a Saturday evening. And that evening is happening at the Miracle Mile museum on Jan. 26, with a party in the Ahmanson starting at 7 o'clock. That's free, and you'll want to RSVP, but do keep in mind you can arrive earlier. If you do? Museum admission is required. Vintage wearables rule the Dapper Day events, though attendees do garb-up in whatever way they like best, with a view to dressing to impress. Dancing and pop-up bars are part of the party, hurrah.
