54-Acre Wildfire Burning Near Ortega Highway

A wildfire that broke out west of Lake Elsinore and temporarily closed state Route 74 in both directions has charred about 54 acres and is 20 percent contained as of Sunday night, authorities said Monday.

The fire was reported at 3:41 p.m. Sunday in a hilly area near the Lookout Roadhouse about 1.5 miles west of Lake Elsinore, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A SigAlert was issued by the CHP and the highway was closed from Grand Avenue to the Orange County line but reopened around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, according to the CHP and Cal Trans.

Firefighters did manage to stop the forward spread of the flames around 5:40 p.m., according to a tweet issued by Riverside County Fire Chief John Hawkins. No injuries were reported. There's no word yet on when full containment might be achieved.
