AEG Demands Put Downtown NFL Stadium in Jeopardy: Report

Minority stake in team could reportedly sour football deal

A deal to bring an NFL team to downtown Los Angeles is reportedly in jeopardy over AEG demands for a minority stake in the team.

AEG chairman Phil Anschutz believes that if he's spending $1 billion to build a new football stadium in downtown, he should get a minority stake at a discounted rate for any team that relocates to LA, Yahoo Sports first reported Thursday.

Those terms are unacceptable to the league and no team would go for it, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said.

"It was friendly, but boiled down to the view that no NFL owner would accept the terms proposed. If [AEG] wanted to get that much control over an NFL franchise, their only option would be to buy a team.

"If they were willing to back off the control and buy a [limited partnership] stake for a reasonable price, then a shared interest in selling suites/clubs/sponsorships could be worked out," a source told Yahoo Sports.

If Anschutz doesn't agree to the NFL's demands, the downtown stadium project could be dead.
