Agents Sieze 300-Pounds of Weed

A motorist caught by border patrol taking the high road

A motorist on his way north through Riverside County was caught with more than 300 pounds of marijuana in his sport utility vehicle.

Agents stopped the 34-year-old suspect on Interstate 15, about a mile south of Murrieta, Thursday around 10:45 a.m., according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

The man, whose name was not released, had just passed the Border Patrol's area checkpoint and was stopped based on agents' suspicions, according to Ralph DeSio of the Border Patrol.

On inspecting the sport utility vehicle, agents uncovered 38 bundles of marijuana, altogether weighing 306 pounds, for an estimated street value of $153,200, said DeSio.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling and turned over to Riverside County sheriff's deputies for processing.
