Man Killed in Second Deadly Anaheim Police Shooting of Weekend

The city's mayor called for an independent probe into another shooting that occurred Saturday in Anaheim

Officers shot and killed a man at the end of a pursuit late Sunday, marking the second deadly officer-involved shooting in Anaheim during the weekend, according to police.

The shooting occurred at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday after two men and a female fled from a sport utility vehicle after a pursuit, according to police. One of the male subjects pulled out a gun and officers opened fire, police said.

"That male fired on the officer," said Sgt. Bob Dunn, of the Anaheim Police Department. "We did locate a handgun next to the body."

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other male subject was taken into custody. Officers continued to search early Monday for the female subject.

Officers had been conducting anti-gang activity in the area near 400 West Guinida Lane.

The shooting death followed the case of a man shot and fatally wounded Saturday at about 4 p.m. The shooting occurred as officers were patrolling an area in the 700 block of North Anna Drive.

Police confirmed they did not find the victim in possession of a weapon.

Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait called for an independent probe into Saturday's shooting. He also asked the state Attorney General’s office to get involved.

The shooting of Manuel Angel Diaz -- shot and killed after a foot pursuit through an alley in an area where police said they saw an increase in gang and narcotics crimes -- prompted protests during the weekend, including one Saturday when a small group of people threw rocks and bottles at police and set a trash bin on fire.  Three people were detained.

On Sunday, protesters gathered outside the Anaheim Police Department.

Anaheim was among six California cities with a population over 100,000 that saw the biggest spikes in violent crime in 2011, according to an analysis of FBI crime data released last month.
