Big Rig Crash Blocks All Lanes Near Newhall Pass

A crash involving a big rig that left one person dead near the Newhall Pass blocked all lanes before the evening commute Monday, officials said.

The transition from the westbound 210 Freeway to the northbound 5 Freeway was shut down after the crash occurred at 4 p.m. in the Sylmar area.

All lanes were to be closed for at least three hours, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash involved three vehicles, including the big rig. One sedan completely flipped onto its roof.

Traffic was backed up from Sunland while the eastbound 118 Freeway was backed up from the 405 Freeway to the 210 Freeway.

Drivers were advised to take Foothill Boulevard as an alternate.

All lanes were reopened at 9:30 p.m., according to the CHP.
