Blowing Away Air Pollution

It's one of the sounds of summer -- leaf blowers.

Now there's a program to lower the decibels and the pollution.

The AQMD is offering to exchange the noisy leaf blowers for new, low-emission, quiet models.  The program is called "Blowing Away Air Pollution" and kicked off in North Hollywood on Thursday. The new units are sold for less than half the retail cost.

The agency hopes to exchange as many as 1,500 leaf blowers. By way of comparison, the AQMD estimates a typical backpack blower used for one year emits as much smog-forming pollution as 10-new cars each driven 20,000 miles.
