BMW i Series Among Debuts at LA Auto Show

The automaker's i Series vehicles are two of more than 30 debuts confirmed for the November show

Car show season is just around the corner, and that means the list of vehicles that will make debuts at the LA Auto Show is getting longer.

The LA show, one of the first on the auto show calendar, has confirmed more than 30 debuts, including 17 world premieres.

Among the newcomers to North America: BMW's i concepts.

They are the first electronically powered production vehicles from the makers of the Ultimate Driving Machine. That milestone warranted a sub-brand the company dubbed "BMW i."

Two models -- the i3 and i8 -- are scheduled to launch in 2013 and 2014. The i3, the smaller of the two, is a four-seat Electric Vehicle designed as a urban runabout. The i8, which looks a lot like BMW's EfficientDynamics concept, is a plug-in hybrid that BMW says can reach 60 mph in an impressive five seconds -- a runabout for those who like to run faster.

"The automotive industry is gaining momentum and the LA Show is an important venue for manufacturers to launch the innovations that are leading the way," said Andy Fuzesi, general manager of the LA Auto Show.

Other North America debuts are expected from Audi, Mazda, which is unveiling a compact crossover vehicle and Volvo.

World debuts include three from Ford and Infiniti's JX Crossover. Fiat, Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, VW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Lincoln also are making world debuts.

The LA Auto Show is scheduled for Nov. 18 through 27.
