Armored Car Teeters Over Side of Freeway Overpass in Boyle Heights

The incident prompted officials to shut down portions of the southbound 5 and westbound 10 freeways

An armored truck dangled over the side of a freeway overpass Friday afternoon near where the 101, 5 and 10 freeways meet, officials said.

The driver reportedly lost control of the truck, which typically transports cash, and smashed through the concrete guardrail shortly before 4 p.m., when that armored truck was sent teetering over the bridge near 7th and Soto Bridge in Boyle Heights, according to CHP incident information

The front end of the truck went over the guardrail.

The driver escaped from the vehicle, and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to LA City Fire officials.

The incident prompted officials to shut down portions of the southbound 5 and westbound 10 freeways around 4:30 p.m. Those closures were lifted about an hour later, double the initial estimate.

Surrounding streets were also closed for another hour, while the armored truck was towed away.

CHP officials described the scene as an “extreme hazard,” citing concrete that was also hanging over the freeway below, according to the agency’s incident information page.
