Crash Kills Mom, Daughter, Niece in Anaheim

The crash was reported after 11 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of South Western Avenue

Police arrested a suspected drunk driver in connection with a crash that left a mother, her daughter and her niece dead as they were leaving a baby shower in Anaheim on Saturday night, officials said.

The incident happened about 11 p.m. when a Honda Civic hit them as they crossed in the 100 block of South Western Avenue, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Bob Dunn.

Carmen Mendoza, 56, and her daughter, Sheyla, 21, suffered fatal wounds from the crash. Carmen Mendoza's niece, Stephanie Henriquez, 21, also died, officials said.

A red four-door Honda Civic was northbound on Western approaching Lincoln when it hit the women, police said.

The man driving the Honda, identified as Anthony Lewis Sanchez, 40, of Buena Park, and his unidentified female passenger were injured and transported to hospitals, police said.

Police said they are holding Sanchez on DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges.

Residents complained about traffic in the neighborhood, saying the nearest crosswalk is more than two blocks away.
