Caught on Camera: Hit-and-Run Driver Crashes Into Highland Park Cafe

Video shows witnesses running over to the building after the impact when the driver attempts to back out before taking off.

Police were searching for a driver who was caught on camera after slamming through the wall of a popular cafe and fleeing the scene in Highland Park early Sunday morning.

The crash happened in the 5000 block of York Boulevard about 2 a.m. when witnesses said they saw a driver of a pickup truck burning rubber along the street, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

According to police, the driver of the truck lost control and swerved into The Highland Cafe.

Exclusive video acquired by NBC4 shows witnesses running over to the building after the impact when the driver attempts to back out before taking off.

"I was over there on the corner getting food when I saw the gentleman in the pickup truck accelerating and I saw him lose control," said Sotero Delgado, who captured the video on his cell phone.

Surveliance video also captured the scene.

The restaurant owner said 17 employees will be out of work during repairs.

Witnesses told police a woman was driving the truck and a man was her passenger.

Police are looking for a 1980s tan Ford pickup truck.
