Celebrate Spring: Go Hiking With Tom LaBonge

Spring is here, and nothing says "rebirth" like a hike in Griffith Park with Councilman Tom LaBonge.

LaBonge was scheduled to lead his annual Spring Equinox Hike Friday night up Mount Hollywood. Hikers met in the Charlie Turner Trailhead in Griffith Park at the north end of the Griffith Observatory parking lot.

Earlier this month, the 4,217-acre park was designated an historic monument. More than 100 years ago, Col. Griffith J. Griffith donated thousands of acres to the city of Los Angeles to create one of the largest urban parks in the country.

"This park is the greatest gift ever given to the city of Los Angeles," LaBonge said when the council designated the park. "Without it, our city would have no soul."
