Cesar Chavez Day Celebrations Begin

LA Unified's Board will vote Tuesday on a resolution to make March 31,  Cesar Chavez Day, an official district holiday in leiu of Admissions Day.

Currently, the birthday of the Mexican American civil rights leader and founder of the United Farm Workers union is recognized by the school district as a day of service and learning, during which students and staff are encouraged to perform community service.

If the resolution before the Board on Tuesday is approved, March 31 would become a paid employee holiday beginning in the 2010-11 school year.

The school board passed a similar resolution in 2000, but the district has yet to make it an official paid holiday.  The decision is up to the Superintendent.
