Driver in Pursuit Arrested After Allegedly Shooting at Police

The driver allegedly fired shots at an officer who tried to pull him over.

A 38-year-old man was arrested in Riverside Tuesday after he allegedly fired shots at authorities while leading them on a chase from Corona.

The officer was flagged down about 6 p.m. in the area of Buchanan and Indiana avenues by someone who said the driver of a van resembled a suspect in a drive-by shooting that occurred in September.

Police chased the driver for about 8 to 10 miles from Corona to Riverside, while allegedly firing shots out the rear window of his van before he crashed into an oncoming vehicle and ran off with a rifle.

Authorities searched for the suspect for 20 minutes before he surrendered, police said.

The man was arrested near the scene of where the pursuit ended in the area of Van Buren Boulevard and Rudicill Street in Riverside, according to the Corona Police Department.

Leslie D. Berry, Jr., of Corona, was arrested and booked on charges of attempted murder, evading police officers and possession of a firearm.

No officers were injured.
