5-Year-old Girl Rushed to Emergency Room After Being Shot in South LA

A 5-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday night with a gunshot wound she suffered inside a South Los Angeles home.

Police responded to a residence near the intersection of 41st Place and Woodlawn Avenue about 5:30 p.m. and found the child suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Paramedics performed a "scoop and run'' and rushed the girl to a hospital with an escort from the LAPD.

"My understanding is that she's in very serious condition,'' LAPD Lt. Raul Jovel initially told news outlets.

That was later updated to critical condition, the LAPD Newton division said.

Authorities said several family members were home at the time of the shooting, but said it was unclear if the shooting was self-inflicted or someone shot the girl, either accidentally or intentionally.
