CHP Officers Stop Boy Riding Bicycle on 101 Freeway

California Highway Patrol officers stopped a 13-year-old boy riding a bicycle on the shoulder of the 101 Freeway last month, officials said Wednesday.

Officers from the West Valley station raced to catch up with him about 9 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls about a boy riding a red bike along the eastbound lanes near Balboa Boulevard, CHP officials said.

Officers stopped him and called his mother to pick him up.

He was not cited. No one was hurt.

"While it might seem like the best and quickest route to get from point a to b, riding a bike or walking on the freeway shoulder is illegal and extremely dangerous," the CHP said in an Instagram post. "We appreciate the public's help in locating this child before anything happened."
