CHP Plane Crashes Killing Officer Pilot

A Cessna 206 plane used by the California Highway Patrol over Southern California freeways to track speeders crashed Friday morning near the Salton Sea killing the officer piloting the aircraft.

The officer was alone in the aircraft and there were no injuries on the ground.

Officers handling the case out of the CHP El Centro office have not identified the pilot of the plane.

The location of the crash was Ocotillo Wells, which is on the border of San Diego and Imperial Counties, southwest of the Salton Sea.

CHP made last contact with the plane at 10:24 a.m.
