Spring Chill Arrives in LA

A cold blast arrived in the Southland, and it's expected to remain during the weekend.

The weather system might bring rain in various parts of the region and snow to mountains, according to a special weather statement.

An unseasonably cold low pressure system moving south along the coast will bring cooler weather through Friday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow could fall, with areas north of Point Conception and throughout the San Gabriel Mountains seeing 1 to 3 inches of snowfall. Snow levels were predicted above 5,000 feet in those areas.

Snow levels that could fall as low as 2,000 feet could reduce visibility and create icy road conditions on the Golden State (5) Freeway near the Grapevine by Thursday night.

Strong onshore winds were expected for Los Angeles County mountains and the Antelope Valley, where a wind advisory was issued. Thunderstorms could hit the region by Friday night.

Orange County coasts could see a slight chance of showers Friday morning with southwest winds from 15 to 20 mph and wind gusts to 30 mph, the NWS reported.

The agency warned mariners that increased winds and swell will cause hazardous water conditions on Orange County coasts.

The main threats with any thunderstorms that develop would be brief, heavy downpours, small hail and dangerous cloud to ground lightning, the NWS said.
