Congratulations, It's a Bouncing Baby Zebra

The Living Desert announced the birth of the park's first Grevy zebra in the past nine years.

The foal weighed 82 pounds when it was born on Oct. 9 to the herd's youngest mare at the preserve, said Kimberly Bowers, the park's director of community relations.

"This is our first zebra birth since 2000," Bowers said. "You can imagine how excited we all are."

Grevy zebras, which are endangered and only live in the Horn of Africa, are black skinned with white stripes. There are only around 2,000 zebra in the wild, Bowers said, adding the park has three mares and one stallion.

"When foals are born, females stand between the foal and the rest of the herd from approximately 20 minutes until the newborn has imprinted on the dam's pattern," Hile said. "This ensures that the foal will stay with its mother and not stray to another zebra that is not lactating."

The Living Desert preserves 1,000 acres of natural desert habitat.
