Construction at LAX Starts Tuesday

Traffic at LAX's Bradley Terminal will likely get worse starting Tuesday, when the three curving inner lanes on lower World Way, between the west end of Terminal 3 to the north end of the Tom Bradley International Terminal, will be closed to accomodate construction.

There will also be intermittent lane closures throughout the airport. Some will last a month, while others will go on for up to two years.

"It might be just like a holiday weekend," said Albert Rodriguez, spokesman for LAX. "In terms of Memorial Day or Thanksgiving or Christmas, just plan ahead."

The big headaches will yield for a big payoff, according to LAX officials. A new wing is being built at the Bradley Terminal to accomodate the massive Airbus A380.

The terminal imporvements are part of a $4.1 billion modernization that also includes a new computerized energy system for all the terminals.

Other changes include remaking the canopies at Bradley. One side of escalators and stairs will also be closed.

Passengers needing taxis or supershuttles will have to go to a neighboring terminal. But officials say all the inconvenience will be worth it, as LAX moves into a new era.

"The long term gain," Rodriguez said, "is we're going to have an international terminal and an airport that we can all be proud of."
