Redondo Beach Woman Killed After Car Crash on PCH Near Point Mugu Rock

A body was found in the water near Mugu Rock in Point Mugu on Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 9:35 a.m., authorities responded to the call of a possible drowning victim. They found a 59-year-old woman's body near the site of a car crash on Pacific Coast Highway, just north of Mugu Rock.

CHP authorities said they believe the woman, a Redondo Beach resident, was killed when her vehicle veered off the road and went over the seaside cliff.

A black Chevrolet Impala was discovered over the side of the road on PCH, apparently landing onto the rocks near where the body was located. The exact time of the crash was unknown, but CHP pinpointed it between 6 and 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

"She was wearing her seat belt. We believe that she was able to get out of her vehicle and maybe due to the high surf she was swept away and taken out to sea," CHP Officer Dan Matthews said.

Investigators were still working to determine the cause of the fatal crash. The woman's identity has not yet been released pending the notification of her family.
