Cyclist Killed in Fullerton Hit and Run

Fullerton police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a male cyclist Wednesday morning

A bicyclist died after a hit-and-run driver collided with him Wednesday morning in Fullerton.

The victim, a man in his mid-to-late 20s, was thrown into the air by the collision. He was transported to St. Jude Medical Center, where he died, according to Fullerton Police Department Sgt. Jeff Stuart.

Police are searching for the driver of the suspect vehicle, which was described a black subcompact car.

The vehicle collided with the cyclist, who was riding a BMX bike and may have been trying to cross Bastanchury Road at Morelia Avenue (map). Stuart said the cyclist may have been coming off a dirt trail used typically used by mountains bikers.

A second car struck the cyclist after the initial accident, but the first car had sped off, Stuart said. Both cars were traveling east on Bastanchury Road, which remained closed between Harbor Boulevard and Euclide Avenue for an investigation.

"The other driver fled and scene, and we're asking for the public's help," Stuart said.

The driver of the second car -- a Volkswagon Jetta that had a dented hood and cracked headlight, aerial video showed -- remained at the scene and was cooperating with police, Stuart said.
