Days Before Election, LA City Attorney Trutanich's Mother Dies

Known as "Nuch," the city attorney is in a tight race to hold onto his officer

The mother of Carmen Trutanich, whose bid to win re-election as Los Angeles' city attorney goes to voters next week, has died, a spokesman confirmed Saturday.

Esther Trutanich died Saturday at age 92 from complications involving pneumonia.

Carmen Trutanich "indefinitely suspended his campaign activities to deal with family matters," spokesman John Schwada said in a statement Saturday evening.

A first generation American who was the daughter of Croatian immigrants, she had raised seven children in San Pedro, according to Carmen Trutanich's biography on his campaign website. She had 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, Schwada's statement said.

In spring 2012, Trutanich suspended campaign activities during his effort to become Los Angeles County's district attorney when his mother was hospitalized.

Trutanich lost the district attorney primary, failing to make the runoff. Now he is running for a second term as city attorney in a tight four-way race.

Trutanich faces former Assemblyman Mike Feuer, considered a frontrunner, as well as attorneys Greg Smith and Noel Weiss, in the March 5 primary election.
