Dick Clark Underwent Prostate Procedure Prior to Death

A death certificate reveals the entertainer and producer had a procedure for an enlarged prostate

Legendary entertainer and producer Dick Clark underwent prostate surgery the day before he died of a heart attack, his publicist confirmed Tuesday.

According to Clark's death certificate, he underwent a procedure on April 17 to cure acute urinary retention due to benign prostatic hyperplasia, which usually means the prostate becomes so inflamed that it becomes difficult to urinate.

"It is a death certificate. It is public record and that's what the death certificate says," said Paul Shefrin, publicist.

Clark died at Santa Monica's St. John's Hospital from a heart attack as a result of coronary artery disease, according to the certificate.

He had been at St. John's Hospital where he suffered the heart attack after an outpatient medical procedure, his publicist said last week.

At the time of Clark’s death, details of his medical procedure were not released. But Congressman David Dreier (R-CA) said he spent time with the 82-year-old at a Malibu dinner party recently and at the time, Clark said he was scheduled to undergo outpatient cataract surgery.

Clark died on April 18 at the age of 82.
