Family “Devastated” by Fatal Metro Beating of 66-Year-Old Man

The family of a 66-year-old man who was badly beaten at a Metro station and later died at a hospital said two women responsible for the attack devastated more lives than they “will ever understand.”

John Whitmore was waiting for the Blue line at the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station on June 13 when two females began to punch and kick him until he collapsed, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Whitmore was taken to a hospital where he died on Friday.

“They need to be caught because they don’t need to be out there killing older people, helpless older people,” said the victim’s sister, Gwendolyn Whitmore.

Whitmore’s sister said her brother was a renowned artist who battled schizophrenia and depression most of his life.

“He didn’t have to be viciously attacked and murdered,” Whitmore said.

Investigators said that there is surveillance footage of the attack, but it had not been released as of Sunday.

Corey Aldridge, John Whitmore’s brother-in-law, said authorities described what could be seen in the footage.

“He walks up on this platform and he goes by them, and they just attack him,” Aldridge said.

Aldridge visited his brother-in-law in the hospital before he died.

“It was obvious that he had a serious concussion,” Aldridge said. “His speech was disjointed, but he did say that he was being followed and harassed by a group of women.”

Aldridge, speaking to the attackers, said they not only murdered him, “but you devastated more lives than you’ll ever understand.”

The investigation is still ongoing.
